It is also book 1 in Dawn of Ascension. I loved Gideon and Elise. A month after their two year relationship ended, she has a vision about his sister and contacts him. They meet at the place they always met during their relationship and she relays the vision to him and the truth from the two years of their relationship that he was unaware of. She reveals all she’d held back to him.
Their connection is deep, smoking hot, and emotional. I loved seeing them grow together, finding their way and fully seeing and knowing each other as Elise embraces her new reality and they find their fit together in this world.

The timeline for this novella is just after Ascension however it can be read as a stand alone or at any time as part of the series.
Elise has resided on mortal earth however she can no longer ignore her abilities. Gideon is a Militia Warrior about to ascend to Warrior status. Elise and Gideon had been meeting weekly at the Blood & Bite for two years before Elise ended the relationship.
I enjoyed this story very much. Elise and Gideon's relationship is romantic based on their past relationship and their intimate scenes were believable and well written.
Don't start reading this story too late in the evening since you will not want to put it down until you are finished.

Elise is orderly, neat and enjoys her life of solitude. She also has powers that she has not shared with anyone and does not plan to. After having a vision of a possible kidnapping, she does the one thing she does not want to do, she calls her ex-boyfriend Gideon to relay the news to him. For the last 2 years Gideon and Elise have met up once a week at the Blood and Bite for a night of passion. Gideon cannot be in a relationship with Elise and she is OK with that, because she is not a relationship kind of girl. Upon meeting up with him again at the Blood and Bite, to relay her vison and the lies she told them while dating, all of the passion they feel for one another errupts and Elise decides to make the biggest decision of her life. Gideon does not think he can handle her decision, but agrees to help her in any way he can.
All I can say about this novela is "WOW". I was PLEASANTLY surprised with this story. I had never read any of the author's books before and seeing as there was just 1 review, I decided to take a chance, how can you not for the price? Anyways, the passion and romance in this story was hot! I read a lot of paranormal romance involving the Alpha male and female meeting and with in 2 days they are rolling in the sheets. I understand why the authors do that though, as there is a strong connection and a "soul mates" kind of feel to those stories. However in this story, Gideon and Elise have known eachother for 2 years and over that time, their passion has grown until finally they can be truthful with themselves and eachother.
I think a good book is when you have to force yourself to stop reading it, not only because it's late, but because you want to draw out the experience of the book. I also think when you DREAM about the story, that is telling the book is really good. BTW, that is what happened with me.
Now, this book is short, only 10 chapters and ends at 71% and the rest of the book are definitions and a teaser chapter for "Ascension". I bought the "1st" book in the series half way through this book, however please note that there are references in THIS book about the main characters in the first book.
I would HIGHLY recommend this read to others. I felt swoonish (if thats a word) through out the book. I thought it was romantic in a non-romantic way (if that makes sense). The love scenes were natural and not forced. I thought it was a lovely book and I wish there was more to it. I loved Gideon and Elise. I cannot wait to read "Ascension" next. Although I think I'll read another short story first, so I can make "Ascension" last as well.
I am completely intrigued by the twist on a much used genre. Roane's premise left me breathless. Her vivid descriptions had me walking (or flying) through this world right alongside her characters. I could see and feel everything that they encountered. This story was a very intimate tale between the two main characters that the reader is drawn into. You cannot help but feel the emotions that Roane writes so eloquently about.
This story was so off centre from the bulk of the vampire genre that I found myself saying `that is sooo cool' many times throughout the novella. I wanted to join this world and ascend alongside them. It`s also very intriguing to see what the history Rome has inspired. The seamless melding of history and this unique view of the paranormal creates a very unique world for this story to take place in.
The characters in this novel are completely off the hook. The main characters were fully developed and easy to get to know. They were human in all aspects, except, of course, for their supernatural additions. Even their dialogue remained natural throughout. It was never forced and always sounded human.
Overall, this story (and the series as a whole) is definitely one of a kind amongst a sea of vampire romance stories. It's definitely a must read for anyone looking for a quick, racy supernatural read that you won't be able to put down. I cannot wait to delve into more from this very talented author.
